Under EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and the White House’s July 2025 AI Action Plan, the administration has used emergency executive powers to streamline permitting for fossil fuel infrastructure, encouraging on-site gas turbines and dedicated power plants. Former officials caution that replacing renewable energy goals with dirty power generation will spread toxic air pollution and increase exposure to persistent chemicals far beyond local facility boundaries.
In response, the former officials are advocating for a Data Center Health Protection Pledge to reinstate environmental oversight. However, current federal policy remains focused on reducing regulatory barriers to build out domestic compute infrastructure and maintain leadership in global AI deployment.
