OpenAI has partnered with the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and the Association of Independent Regional Press Publishers of Ukraine (AIRPPU) to launch an initiative supporting Ukrainian media outlets. The project combines a masterclass series on AI adoption with a dedicated incubator program, the Newsroom AI Catalyst, set to launch on September 17, 2026.
The Newsroom AI Catalyst will provide hands-on technical support to ten participating Ukrainian news organizations to help them develop custom AI implementations for editorial workflows, product development, and audience engagement. Additionally, all participating organizations will receive OpenAI API credits to build bespoke newsroom tools.
The collaboration aims to bolster media resilience and operational efficiency during ongoing regional conflict. It builds on previous joint initiatives by WAN-IFRA and OpenAI focused on responsible AI adoption in global journalism.
