OpenAI has notified SpaceX of its intent to terminate its contract supplying AI models to the Cursor coding platform, setting an effective cancellation date of November 12, 2026. The decision comes following SpaceX’s acquisition of Cursor and exercises a contractual change-of-control clause that grants OpenAI a limited window to cancel model access.
OpenAI cited past contractual and terms-of-service violations by companies owned by Elon Musk—including Twitter and xAI—as the primary reason for ending the partnership. The company stated it could not maintain confidence that SpaceX would adhere to usage terms, especially with the upcoming release of its next-generation model, Astra.
