Paris-based generative AI startup Mistral AI has raised $3.5 billion in a Series D funding round led by Samsung Electronics, nearly doubling its valuation to over $24 billion. The round included co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund (managed by EQT) and existing investor PSG Equity. This financing comes one year after its $2 billion Series C, bringing the company’s total funding to $7.5 billion since its 2023 launch.

Mistral remains the highest-valued foundation model company in Europe, competing directly with U.S. giants such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Unlike many U.S. competitors, Mistral differentiates itself by offering models that enterprises can customize and deploy on their own infrastructure rather than relying entirely on third-party cloud providers.

According to the company, the new capital will support frontier research, infrastructure expansion, and international growth. Mistral currently operates in 20 countries and serves over 125 enterprise customers, including Airbus, ASML, BMW, and HSBC.

Why it matters

  • Mistral’s $24B valuation proves European frontier labs can attract massive mega-rounds despite fierce U.S. competition.

  • Enterprises seeking deployable, self-hosted frontier models have a strongly capitalized alternative to hyperscaler-locked APIs.

  • Samsung’s lead investment highlights growing strategic interest from hardware giants in funding independent model providers.
