UK autonomous driving startup Wayve and Uber have launched London’s first commercial robotaxi service on Thursday. The initial deployment consists of 15 modified Ford Mustang vehicles available for hire via the Uber app, operating with a licensed human safety driver in the front seat.
Transport for London licensed the vehicles under private hire rules, which still mandate supervising safety drivers. Full approval for driverless operations without human oversight requires separate authorization from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, which is unexpected before the end of the year.
Unlike competitors like Waymo that rely heavily on HD mapping, Wayve utilizes end-to-end AI learning models for navigation. The company plans to scale the service to new Nissan Leaf vehicles as it works through safety metrics and regulatory milestones across European markets.
