Bengaluru-based aerospace startup Alteon has raised $2.5 million in a pre-seed funding round led by solo investor Lachy Groom, with participation from Together Fund. Founded by 20-year-old Samay Sanghvi, the company is building autonomous fixed-wing aircraft designed to stay airborne for up to a year by extracting energy from ocean wind shear through dynamic soaring.
Alteon recently conducted a test over the Bay of Bengal, where its autonomous flight system successfully completed seven O-shaped flight cycles at over 62 mph within one meter of the ocean’s surface. The startup plans to initially target maritime surveillance, providing governments with real-time visibility over territorial waters.
While aerospace experts acknowledge the underlying physics of dynamic soaring, they note that Alteon’s primary technical hurdle will be achieving energy-neutral flight while reacting to unpredictable ocean turbulence, waves, and changing weather conditions without propulsion.
