Instagram has announced new enforcement actions targeting unlabelled AI influencer accounts that impersonate human beings on the platform. As part of the update, the social network is changing its “AI creator” label to “AI-generated profile” to clearly indicate to users when an account features an artificial persona rather than a real person.

Under the new rules, Instagram will automatically detect profiles featuring AI-generated humans that fail to self-label. Accounts flagged for non-compliance will face penalties that limit their organic reach, preventing their posts from being recommended to non-followers across the platform’s Reels and Explore surfaces. Account owners will have the option to appeal incorrect automated flags.

According to Instagram, the policy change specifically targets accounts presenting AI entities as real humans, and does not require general creators using AI tools for content editing to apply the profile label. The platform stated that users expressed frustration with discovering that human-looking profiles were synthetic.

Why it matters

  • Startups building virtual influencers face reduced organic discovery unless they transparently declare AI status to platforms.

  • Social networks are escalating technical enforcement against synthetic identities to preserve consumer trust on discovery feeds.

  • Content optimization strategies must account for automated reach penalties across major distribution channels like Reels and Explore.
