ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), China’s leading memory manufacturer, has begun small-scale production of HBM3E memory chips, according to a report from The Information. High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) is a critical hardware component used alongside processors to train and run complex AI models.
Domestic Chinese chip designers, including Alibaba’s T-Head and Cambricon, are currently testing CXMT’s HBM3E chips with plans to integrate them into AI hardware by 2027. Local HBM production could provide domestic firms an alternative path around strict U.S. export restrictions that limit access to foreign advanced memory components.
Despite the milestone, CXMT remains a generation behind global leaders Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, which are producing HBM4. Industry analysts note that CXMT faces low manufacturing yields of around 25% and significant technical hurdles before achieving viable mass production.
