Amazon has blocked Meta’s Muse AI agent from making purchases on its e-commerce platform on behalf of users. According to reports from GeekWire, Amazon began displaying error messages to Muse users stating that unauthorized AI agent access violates its Conditions of Use. Meta reportedly deployed the agent to Amazon’s platform without advance notification.

Amazon cited privacy and security risks, noting that Muse failed to properly identify itself while browsing and appeared to capture customer credentials. A company spokesperson emphasized that third-party applications making purchases must operate transparently and respect provider decisions. While Meta previously claimed Muse cannot view secure login details or card data, independent reports have flagged privacy issues where the agent accessed user message contents without permission.

This move reflects Amazon’s broader strategy to protect its retail data and customer relationship from third-party AI services. The retailer previously sued Perplexity over its Comet shopping integration and has recently omitted product names and images from email confirmations to prevent automated web scraping by external models.

Why it matters

  • E-commerce platforms are actively restricting third-party AI agents from executing transactions and capturing customer data.

  • Agentic AI developers must secure explicit platform partnerships to avoid operational blockades and access revocations.
